Exit slip

The movie was very intriguing because it focused on discrimination against a minority group. The investigators were accused by Jaime of racism. The students were wrongly accused either because of being a minority group or just because of the status of the school. This really reflected that era of racism and discrimination around that time and how people were wrong to accuse them.

  1. Is racism still a problem? Could something like what you described - "students were wrongly accused either because of being a minority group or just because of the status of the school" - still happen today?

  2. Do you think the race of the minority group played a bigger role in the discrimination than the status of the school? Was it that the students were not expected to pass what lead to the accusation of cheating?

    1. I believe that the race of the group played a bigger role than the status of the school. I also believe that the students were not expected to pass and that it did lead to to the accusation of cheating.

  3. Albert, that's kind of what I was thinking - that the low expectations for the school were the result of racism.

Racist stereotyping can actually lead to lower performance - it's called "stereotype threat." So the expectation that Garfield students would perform badly - which I would argue is based on racism - could actually lower their performance.

(Regarding stereotype threat: "If negative stereotypes are present regarding a specific group, group members are likely to become anxious about their performance, which may hinder their ability to perform at their maximum level. For example, stereotype threat can lower the intellectual performance of African Americans taking the SAT test used for college entrance in the United States, due to the stereotype that African Americans are less intelligent than other groups." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotype_threat)
