Stand and deliver really shows how students can achieve what they strive for. The movie takes place in Garfield high school where Mr. Escalante is a new math teachers the school is in poverty and us students can all relate to the students in the movie. All the students Mr. Escalante teaches all have stories of their own how they survive living in situation they were born into. Mr. Escalante decides to take them on a field trip which then encourages him that he can teach his students calculus. He and all his students devote two years of his and their time to teach them and he even teaches them before and after class and even during the summer so they could have a better future than their parents just like our parents strive for us to have more than what they had. The movie shows us how everyone who devotes time, patients, and courage can all achieve what they put their mind to even when people doubt you.
I think it's important that you mentioned the field trip - it was the field trip that showed Mr. Escalante that his kids needed to learn calculus. This shows that the school can't act as if it's a world in itself - schools have to connect to the community. If our students don't see how school connects to the wider world, then we need to ask ourselves, as educators, how we can change our approach.
