Stand and Deliver Blog post

The movie begins when a man by the name of Jaime Escalante decides to teach math at Garfield High School in Los Angeles. When Mr. Escalante arrives at the school, no one believed he could teach the rowdy kids math and actually knock some sense and logic into their heads. The staff at the school were doubting that Mr. Escalante was gonna last with those kids since they were trouble-makers. When Escalante arrives at the classroom, all the kids attempt to give him a hard time but he goes along with what the students and the kids fail at giving him a hard time. A group of gang bangers arrive in the classroom and out of the entire posse, only one decides to stay in that class. Turns out that the gang banger that decided to stay in the class was actually intelligent and only refused to show his intelligence because he did not wanna come off as a nerd in front of his ¨homies¨. In the classroom, there was also a girl who was really intelligent and seemed to have  really bright future but the only thing that was impeding her from doing as she pleased with her booksmarts was her father. Her father owned a restaurant in which he wanted his daughter to work in rather than having her continue with school to become whatever she desires to be. Mr. Escalante finds out about this and tries to convince the girl´s father into letting her continue to prepare herself for the future and her father gets mad at Escalante because he was telling him what to do and he did not like that and he kicked Escalante from the restaurant. There was a point that the girl stopped attending class because she was being forced to work but somehow she finds her way around and starts attending class again. All the stress and work that Mr. Escalante was facing brought him stress and he had a heart attack while he was teaching english for foreigners. The students found out about this incident and were saddened aside from not like liking Escalante at the beginning. Mr. Escalante prepared the students for their AP calculus exam and since he was out due to what happened to him, the students had to study by themselves for a few days until the day of the exam and when the exam came, they all passed which brought suspicion to the staff and school because they started off as not so intellectual and trouble making kids. They accused the whole class of cheating and made them retake the AP exam. Again, the kids passed the exam. Escalante returned before they re-took the AP exam.

  1. Angelica, I'm curious to know what your opinion is of all the events in the movie. For example, what do you think about the accusations of cheating? Were they reasonable, or were they based on racism?
