I found it disheartening that many were in disbelief that the students' achievement in passing the AP test because of where the students came from. The accusation shows that educators do not believe in their students. If the students had been from places such as Beverly Hills or did not have Spanish surnames then the students would not have been accused of cheating.
However I am glad with the resolution of the film. The students did actually succeed, proving that it is possible to defeat the circumstances people are put into. This inspires me because I feel the same way in that people in my community do not necessary expect much of me but I do have potential.
I'm intrigued by your comment "people in my community do not...expect much of me." Why do you think this is the case? Do you think that the MVHS community (teachers, other students, staff) have high expectations for you? If not, what would be a step that we could take to show that we believe in you? (For what it's worth, I'm confident that you'll accomplish a lot - but that doesn't help much if I haven't communicated that belief!)
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that the MVHS Staff does have the expectations and do indeed help me when I seek their help. What I meant was more of a neighborhood issue rather than the school itself. Many people have the mentality that they simply can't, so being surround by this doesn't really help to motivate anyone.
