Chris McCandless sounds like a guy who just didn't find society something that he wants to be a part so in thinking that he turns to nature and becomes a tramp. He travels on adventures and never really knows where he'll end up and in doing so he meets a lot of people, many of whom found him quite interesting and to some degree even inspire them to leave their old life and start a new in the ways of a tramp. His death made a huge impact on those he met even though he'd only known them for a short while. McCandless' story is one that interests me because the book lets you make up your own mind about this wanderer providing descriptions as well as examples of other travelers similar to McCandless. So far I see him as a man who did what he wanted and died happy knowing that he did. I don't see any reason to call him a dumb kid based on that.

Would you call him courageous or call him foolish?
ReplyDeleteI'd call him courageous. He had more of an adventure in his short life than most people have when they're 80

ReplyDeleteThis idea - McCandless was courageous - might be the thesis of your essay, then. As you read the rest of the book:
ReplyDelete1) see if any additional evidence emerges that challenges your idea
2) collect evidence that supports your thesis
Will do
