Project Log: Why are people racist

Today, we decided on the essential question/topic for our project:
Why are people racist and why is the issue of racism difficult to overcome

Our final product would possibly be a poster or information flyer with info on the topic. The main purpose is that by reading our information, the reader might become more open-minded and empathetic to different types of people.

Some ideas for gathering our info are:

  • Ask a poll
    • "Why do you think people are racist?"
  • Look at current racism
    • Find out why these people have those beliefs
    • Try to discredit their racist belief 
  • Ask people who faced racism
    • Why they think they were treated that way
  • Historical Examples
    • People take out their anger on people who are different

    I wonder if it might help to focus on one of these ideas?

    Also, I like the idea of the poll, but I wonder if your question will give you the results you want? Instead of asking why people believe OTHER PEOPLE are racist, maybe you would want to find out what your respondents' beliefs are?
